The Footprints of a Baby Elephant

 

Date/Time: July 8th / 2:35 p.m.

Notes: Today was my first day in Africa. I took lots of pictures of elephants. This morning, I found an elephant group by a small water hole. I saw a baby elephant drinking water beside her mother. Her eyes were as bright as stars. I gave her a name, Stella. Around noon, I saw a group of lions approaching Stella. The elephants stood around Stella and made a thick wall. Thanks to them, Stella was safe.

 

Date/Time: July 12th / 7:20 p.m.

Notes: Around sunset, I heard a strange sound. I followed the sound and found Stella crying next to her mom. She was lying dead and Stella was alone. It is dangerous to stay alone in such a wild area. What's more, it was going to be dark soon. Elephants can't see well at night. So Stella could easily be attacked. I called the elephant shelter and asked for help. I decided to stay by her until the rescue team came.

 

Date/Time: July 12th / 10:40 p.m.

Notes: The night was dark and quiet. I kept my eyes on Stella with my night camera. Stella was still next to her mom. She was touching her mom's lifeless body with her nose. It was sad to see Stella staying close to her mom. I hope Stella stays safe throughout the night.

 

Date/Time: July 13th / 6:00 a.m.

Notes: A new elephant group appeared and Stella approached them. At first, I thought that they would not let Stella in their group. But I was wrong. An elephant, probably the oldest female allowed Stella to become part of the group. The other elephants also seemed to welcome Stella. Unbelievably, one of the female elephants fed Stella. She cared for Stella as warmly as Stella's mom did. This was such an amazing moment!

날짜/시간: 7월 8일, 오후 2시 35분

기록: 오늘은 내가 아프리카에 온 첫날이었다. 나는 코끼리 사진을 많이 찍었다. 오늘 아침에 나는 작은 물웅덩이 옆에 있는 한 코끼리 무리를 발견했다. 나는 아기 코끼리 한 마리가 엄마 옆에서 물을 마시고 있는 것을 보았다. 그 코끼리의 눈이 별처럼 밝았다. 나는 그 코끼리에게 Stella란 이름을 붙여 주었다.  정오 즈음에 나는 사자 한 무리가 Stella에게 다가가는 것을 보았다. 코끼리들은 Stella 주위에 둘러서서 두꺼운 벽을 만들었다. 그 코끼리들 덕분에 Stella는 안전했다.

 

날짜/시간: 7월 12일, 오후 7시 20분

기록: 해질녘에 나는 이상한 소리를 들었다. 나는 그 소리를 따라갔고 Stella가 자신의 엄마 옆에서 울고 있는 것을 발견했다. 엄마는 죽어서 누워 있었고, Stella는 혼자였다. 이러한 야생 지역에서 혼자 있는 것은 위험하다. 더욱이 곧 어두워질 것이었다. 코끼리들은 밤에 잘 볼 수 없다. 그래서 Stella는 쉽게 공격을 받을 수 있다. 나는 코끼리 보호소에 전화를 해서 도움을 요청했다. 나는 구조대가 올 때까지 Stella 곁에 머물기로 결정했다.

 

날짜/시간: 7월 12일, 오후 10시 40분

기록: 밤은 어둡고 조용했다. 나는 야간용 카메라를 이용해서 Stella를 계속 지켜보았다. Stella는 여전히 엄마 곁에 있었다. Stella는 코로 엄마의 죽은 몸을 어루만지고 있었다. Stella가 엄마 가까이에 머물고 있는 것을 보는 것은 슬픈 일이었다. 나는 Stella가 밤새도록 안전하게 있기를 바란다.

 

날짜/시간: 7월 13일, 오전 6시

기록: 새로운 코끼리 무리가 나타났고, Stella는 그 무리에 다가갔다. 처음에 나는 그 코끼리들이 Stella를 자신들의 무리로 받아들이지 않을 것이라고 생각했다. 그러나 내 생각이 틀렸다. 아마도 가장 나이가 많은 암컷인 듯한 코끼리 한 마리가 Stella가 그 무리의 일원이 되도록 허락했다. 다른 코끼리들도 Stella를 반기는 것처럼 보였다. 믿을 수 없게도, 암컷 코끼리 중의 한 마리가 Stella에게 젖을 먹였다. 그 코끼리는 Stella의 엄마만큼 따뜻하게 Stella를 보살폈다. 이것은 너무나 놀라운 순간이었다!
